Reflecting on sonship

What are the implications of my heritage in Christ? Many thoughts come to mind at this very hour.

First, I see association. To be called a child of God is nothing short of a miracle. God is my family. I belong somewhere; I have a place to call home, far from the wretched and depraved elements that surround me in this world. In Christ, I find my true identity and a sense of belonging that transcends all earthly ties.

I also see inheritance. I understand that all Christ has belongs to me, for I am a joint-heir with Him. Every spiritual blessing is secured for me according to the will of the Father. This inheritance is not just a promise for the future but a present reality, rich with the resources of heaven, enabling me to live out my calling with confidence and power.

Moreover, I see detachment. Being kin with Christ demands that I separate myself unto loftier pursuits. I must walk circumspectly, as an ambassador for God unto the world, proving and proclaiming the virtues found in His kingdom to all who will behold. My life should reflect the example set by our Lord Himself, who, though “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt amongst us; and we beheld His glory, as the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” If I must be full of anything at any time, may it be grace and truth all my days.

I also see work. Yes, I am a son, but more descriptively, I am a serving son. A son who must bear the burdens of his Father’s kingdom. Jesus was filled with a sharp sense of urgency, so much so that He proclaimed, “I must do the works of Him that sent me while it is yet day, for the night cometh, when no man can work.” As His follower, this urgency must be mine as well. My sonship comes with responsibility—a call to action, to serve faithfully, and to steward well the tasks entrusted to me.

Because I am a son, I must be responsible. I must be trustworthy. This heritage is not a mere title but a profound calling that requires my whole heart, mind, and strength. So, my Father, help me to live in a manner worthy of the name I bear, to embrace my inheritance fully, and to walk faithfully in the work You have set before me.

In this understanding, I find the motivation to press on, to live a life that reflects the glory of the One who called me out of darkness into His marvelous light. May I, in all things, prove to be a true child of God—faithful, diligent, and ever seeking to fulfill His will on earth as it is in heaven.

We are not made holy by clever ideas or comforting sentiments, but by truth that cuts, cleanses, and consecrates.
